MAC 8 Tenor - Vintage Bare Rose Brass / Matte Silver Finish

    Introduction

Last week I had the opportunity to play the MacSax Mac 8 Rose Tenor Saxophone.  Below you can read some details about my experience test playing this instrument. The setup I used was a MACSAX FJ III 6*mouthpiece & Rico Select Jazz #3.

The instrument is fabricated in Taiwan for MacSax , design specifications and configured in their shop in Austin, Texas.

    Appearance
I really liked the look of this instrument. It features a nice vintage bare body with matte silver keys and neck. It definitely catches your attention. They also offer this model in different combination finishes.

    Sound & Intonation
This instrument has a fat & warm sound which I really liked. The pitch was even throughout the full range. I got a big sound on all registers including altissimo which I found very easy to play, especially the high G which I often find challenging to play on many tenor saxophones. I got a very big fat sound on the lower register.

    Construction & Ergonomics
It comes well configured and ready to play right out of the case. The construction is solid and seems to have good support between bell & body. They also added a special bracket for the left hand spatula. Other features include enlarged bell, double key arms on the low C and B keys & pisoni pro pads with domed resonators.

I had no trouble getting used the instrument. I find it quite ergonomic pleasing and easy to play; at least in comparison with my Buffet SDA Tenor it is definitely more comfortable. Even though it is 85% copper I didn’t think it was too heavy. I believe it weights around 7 pounds.

    Overall Experience
The Mac8 Rose Tenor is a bit pricey (Listed for $3,695), but a very good professional horn. If you can afford it, you do get a good value for your money. It compares easily to other top brands manufactured in Taiwan, however I was very impressed with the configuration and their benchmark TM setup which is included standard on this model.
