Hi JJulpe. thanks for the kind words. I improve my tone by listening to other sax players with great tone & then recording & listening to me playing & continue to make adjustments... Do you have a website where I can hear you?

I know it may be boring but I played my scales and patterns for years among other things, but you have to listen to music & play along. There is all kinds of information on line and youtube to help you. You can do it!!!

I know that's weird, but none took me seriously lol, but I am not sad about it at all. The former dean of muisc (Dr. Bulber) owned a music store down the streat & he always had music for saxophone. I would sit on the floor & go through it all. I remember selecting the Glazunov Concerto for Alto Sax for my senior recital (actually most if not the entire recital) & just gave it to my sax instructor. I marveled at the complexity & the challenge of this composition. Now my flute instructer (Mrs. Bulber) was very hands on with me. I learned jazz from the drum/percussion instructor who taught jazz classes (Dr. Mahady). Then I just kept buying more jazz literature, etc. to teach myself. So my favorite professors were not sax players at all. Melvin, this is actually the 1st time I realized that!! You made me think :). less
Oh wow I have so many, but it would probably be someone like Earth Wind & Fire, Billy Cobham, Sonny Rollins, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Victor Wooden, Jonathan Butler, etc

So really I don't have to recommend lol. Yes, the $$ could be lower!

@Joyce Spencer, The plastic trombone you're talking about is a different story, the "P-Bone", that's how it's called, sounds good, but it has to do something with the fact a trombone is a different instrument, is not a woodwind, and the tone production is different, perhaps the quality is less affected by the material in this case. The trombone is basically a single tube that goes longer or shorter to change the pitch, no valves or keys, no holes, etc. Also, the production of the P-Bone is much "easier" and cheaper, so you can get a P-Bone for quite a cheap price nowadays.
Totally agree Ziv!!... moreZiv Leyes said:

I talked to the trombone player about what you said on break & agreed that it would be very hard or next to impossible to do the same with the sax, but then again, I always leave a small door open just in case, as women & men are doing some amazig things.

I would be willing to try it though, but I doubt I would buy it. It's hard to imagine it measurig up....but I heard a local trombone player play a purple horn that looked like plastic. He was amazing. So who knows!! I think it would make great marching band horns, as I think they are moisture or rain resistant. I could have use this in my rainy, cold marchig band days. less

I tend to like a more robust sound, as you can always reduce the sound down. When I'm playing praise & worship, there's nothing better than a nice beautiful tone/intonation. Now I look for a lot of the same in a mouthpice. Just purchased a tenor E. Rousseau for my tenor, which had a better sound that the Jody Jazz for less than 1/2 the price, but my J. The maintenance of four intruments, learning music, paying for me monthly fees for website, email service, gas, rehersals, etc. became a real expense for me. Recently someone asked me to take care of the music for a huge event. I was honored, but when I asked how much? He didn't answer. When I asked one of the coordinators at a women's conference (where I played) how much they paid speakers. They paid each speaker 2K to 3K, but I was told there was no $$ for me to minister on my sax, but could sell CD's. I explained with all due respect that just about anyone at this table can write a book, as we all have a story, but not everyone can play (sing) instruments. It's disrespectful to tell the musician there is no $$ then give a speaker 2K-3K. Now that's when I have a concern & that ind... less

Biography
Joyce grew up in a small town with limited resources to study music; however, it did not discourage her passion. She started playing clarinet in middle school, but grew very fond of the tenor saxophone in the 12th grade. Later, she added the alto sax and flute in college where she majored in instrumental music education. After an approximate 20-year hiatus, Joyce returned to her love and passion for music and released her first CD, “Sweet Dreams”, in 2010.
The CD is a collection of instrumental (alto/soprano sax and flute) and vocal music created to calm, soothe, and bring healing to your soul. Her music has been labeled Inspirational Jazz, Smooth Jazz, and Smooth/Contemporary Gospel, but she plays all styles. She was nominated Best Female Artist by the South Florida Gospel Music Awards in 2010, and received The Heart and Soul Inspiration Award from Coffee Talk Jazz in 2011. Joyce was also awarded by the ASCAPLUS Awards panel for original work on the CD and other compositions, including an original musical score entitled, “Glory to God” for two consecutive years.
Joyce has been featured in several radio and television shows such as Joshua’s House for Christian Artists, Jazzy100.com streaming music and commentary around the world, GHP Radio Network, Bethlehem Baptist Church Television Program, The Ester Davis Talk Show, The Dallas Spot Light – “The Grind” Talk Show, Dallas Late Night Gospel Show, LA Jazz, Wendy Williams’ WNUR 89.3 FM Inspirational Jazz hour, Smooth Jazz Radio Channel internet radio, Tehillah Praise TPBN Radio, Coffee Talk Jazz Radio, Jazzin' 'Em Up with Cres O'Neal, KJAZZ radio, etc. Joyce was recently honored for her accomplishments in a published article by “ All About Jazz “, a leading jazz music website for industry professionals and enthusiasts,” entitled “Take Five with Joyce Spencer”. She was also honored to make the front cover the Spirit Alive Magazine's October 2011 issue, and the front cover of her hometown newspaper, "Basile Weekly".
Joyce is a solo artist and she plays in several venues with her band, Expressions, which includes H. Tyrone Walls (keys/band leader), Tony Key (drums/vocals), Jeffrey "Grits" Lewis (bass), and Harry Jackson (lead guitar). She is also a member of Tony Key and The Faith Band.
