Hi Mitchell, I'm a Middle Schooler, and about two months ago, I was asking the same question. There are a lot of good horns out there your budget can handle. What ever you've been looking at, I'd suggest adding these two brands in your search,... Phil Barone and Cannonball.
I've owed the Phil Barone Vintage Alto for about two years now and it's an awesome horn for the price. It's a big bore alto so it's got a kinda spread sound to it,... some say like the JK horns. Barone has a Classic version of this horn that has a smaller bore to it and lots of people say it sounds more like a Yamaha or a Selmer,... brighter and more fo... less

Eric, Jr. HarrisonHi Mr. Garcia,... this is the video of Myron Walden I was telling you about. He's on the Alto. The Tenor is Melvin Butler. Check out Mr. Butler's head move and Mona Lisa type smile at 8:34,... majestic!

Hey thanks Ms. Spencer. Today is a double good day for me. I officially became a 7th grader and 12 years old,... all in the same day! WhooHoo!

Can you explain kinda like a summary what the differences are between the Otto Link Vintage Series, the Otto Link New York Series, and the one they just call the Otto Link Metal? I wanna order a metal piece for my new tenor, and I've settled on the Otto Link, but I'm not sure which one or why. My Parents told me to order what I want, mainly because I graduated to the 7th grade, got some pretty grades, and won the Woodwind Single Reed Achievement Award at Peabody Prep. So I wanna use this green light to get me an Otto Link for my new Brute. BTW, I put up some pics of me and my family at the Award Ceremony up in my album here. less

The Vintage is brighter like the "Floridas" I'm not the best person to ask about Links, because I've never been a big fan of them. Some people sound terrific on them though. I recently got a Phil Barone Super New York which is modeled off the old New York Links but with more projection. Do you have a saxophone teacher that can help you with this? If it were me, I wouldn't even consider the current production Links, nor Meyers for alto. There's a lot of great pieces being made that are copies of the great Vintage pieces for much less than what Vintage ones cost: Phil Tone, Springer, EZ, Sakshama (!!!) Brian Powell, Mouthpiece Cafe, Greg Wier, etc... less

A little over a month ago I got a new Cannonball Brute tenor. I've been looking at the Otto Links on WWBW, but there are three of them, a Vintage Series Metal, a New York Series Metal and a one just marked "Metal". The description on WWBW's site doesn't really tell what sound qualities separates the three. I was just given the go ahead to order one of them, but I'd like to hear from some players who know what type of sound each brings to the table.
I've only been playing for a little over 2 years and I'm a middle schooler. My horn is a Cannonball Big Bell and right now I'm using the Cannonball 5* that came with it. I'm not looking for anything real dark, and nothing real bright/edgy either. This will be my first metal mouthpiece,... alto or tenor! I'm looking for something I can grown into rather than something I'll grow out of. I guess I'm saying I'd rather have something more challenging now rather than something that will quickly become un-inspiring as ... less

Eric, Jr. Harrison → Forestone Reeds Japan: For those who have used Forestones AND Ligeres, can you talk about the differences between the two? Thanks. I've used Ligere before and sorta like them. I found them to be very buzzy sometimes. But that's not all a bad thing either.

The difference to me is that Legere is a more stiffer read and their for the sound is somewhat buzzier! Forestone is a softer reed with more consistency in the sound throught the range of the horn ! They don't warp at all and last forever! You have to be careful with what size you choose because they are a softer reed! They a filed and unfiled cut.

Eric, Jr. HarrisonCool Mr. Garcia. I play a RSJ 3S on the Alto and I'm kinda comfortable with that. I bit more comfortable with 2H's though. What would that equate to in Forestone? I bit more comfortable with 2H's though. What would that equate to in Forestone? I have no idea what I'm comfortable with in a Tenor yet. I'm playing around with RSJ 2S and Java 2. The music store gave me a box of the Tenor Java reeds for free when we bought the Cannonball Brute. So I tried them,... they're not bad. But I got a while before even thinking about a synthetic for tenor.
Eric, Jr. Harrison
Hey I'm just realizing that I shoulda put this in Discussions! Sorry Mr. Garcia. Can you move this please?

Nelson Garcia
I think you should try a Forestone 2 1/2 or maybe even a size 3. A vandoren java 2 1/2 equals to Forestone 3. They are great synthetic reeds . Give them a try www.forestone-Japan.com

Biography
I'm a 7th grade student and started playing the saxophone in the 5th grade. I'm in the Magnet Performing Art Program at my Middle School, and will be starting my 3rd year at Peabody Prep in the Fall. This summer will be my first year playing the tenor and will start my individual lessons on the tenor this summer at Peabody. Hopefully I'll learn enough by the Fall semester to play both the Alto and the Tenor in Wind Orchestra. Depending on the piece we're playing, a lot of the older students do this already,... some of the low brass guys will either play the Tuba or the Euphonium, one of the Trombone players will pick up his Bass Trumpet, one of the three Bassoon players also plays the Clarinet, and a few of the Flute players will sometimes play the Piccolo or an Oboe. Again, it all depends on the piece we're playing and sometimes who's available.
Dave Liebman will discuss Overtone Warmup Excercises with our members in our video-chat. Do not miss it!
