    But I remember not liking it (at first) when a great sax player (Chuck Berg) showed up at a club and stood right in front of me for two hour-long sets . . . later he bought me a drink and said how much he enjoyed my playing.

    But I remember not liking it (at first) when a great sax player (Chuck Berg) showed up at a club and stood right in front of me for two hour-long sets . . . later he bought me a drink and said how much he enjoyed my playing.
     
    I also remember showing up for a wedding gig where there was something like 500 guests and the band (a jazz quartet) was set up above the crowd on an elevated stage.  I'd just gotten set up (still about 30 minutes before the scheduled time for the gig to begin) when the wedding planner told us the bride and groom had arrived and we needed to go ahead and play the first dance right now . . . not warmed up, in front of 500 guests, I broke into "Tenderly" until the rest of the band came in.  About halfway through the second chorus, I got the terrific urge to break into "Tenor Madness" for some reason and really freaked myself out--nothing happened, but I remember feeling a little fear then ;~}.   less
