I want to know if someone experienced the same thing then me and advices if possible: I broke my lip and it's the 3rd time in about 2 years. There is no way I'll change my mouthpiece. It's the first time I break my lip not playing on a cruise ship but I normally play/practice the same amount of time that I used to play on cruise ships. So I broke my lip last Thursday practicing, took a break on Friday and on Saturday, I got a 5 hours gig only with playbacks. My mouthpiece and reed were full of blood. I was trying to change my mouthpiece position a little bit on the side, to change the reed/mouthpiece contact on my lip but kept coming back to my normal position... Any advices or suggestions?  less

Joe Lovano, Mark Turner, Branford Marsalis, Yannick Rieu are probably the artists I listen the most. For the rest... well, the list would be too long!

But I used to be an amateur one. I did the Quebec rowing team for 7 years doing Canada Games, Canada Cup(s), Royal Henley Regatta, etc. I was a professional sax player at the same time. i thing that the hardest part of it was the time schedule. During winter, rowing was impossible because of the frozen river so I was working in gyms, doing jogging, cross-country skiing, at the time I wanted. But during summer, I had to be on the water the first time of the day at 5:30 am! Not so easy when you live from your gigs and they end at 11:00 pm. So after the gig, I was going to bed to sleep a little then row then sleep the rest of the morning (10:00 to 12:00), then practice the sax, rowning again and gig at night. I had a couple of girl-friends those 7 years... They were patient.   less

Ok so for the only one note, it is the "blue note" played and repeated few times by Yusef Lateef in "Like it Is". I never heard someone else playing one note with so much soul. I try to do it as well when I play the blues but I bet that I'm not cool enough yet...

To me, the sound is the most important thing. I am not a big fan of the 80's sound ala Brecker even if I like is playing or smooth jazz saxophone. I like the sound big warm and stable. I like to hear the vibration in it. This is also why I play on the saxes I play. What I liked the most in my P. Mauriat 66RUL is the vibration I was getting from it, probably because there is no lacker.  less

I'll certainly go with Sonny as well but there is also Mark Turner, Brandford, Joe Lovano and a very good french-canadian sax player named Yannick Rieu. On the pop scene that would be Jamorioquai and Red Hot Chili Pepper.

Early Conns for me! I also wish having a cigar cutter but can't deal with the keys, a Buescher and a Super 20! My P.Mauriat really does a great job for a modern sax as well. My Conns ( Chu Berry and Transitor) really have something magic.

Jean-Philippe Côté I am living in Sao Paulo, Brazil so the weather changes are not as extreme then my previous city, Montreal... I truly believe that it is due to the vibration of the reed on the contact point between it and the mouthpiece...

Jean-Philippe Côté I am using Rico Royal now but I used to use Rico Select Jazz or Frederick L. Hemkee. I don't like the Select Jazz anymore because I believe that the sound change too much while getting older.

I tried an alto System 76 and a MK VI lately... 2 different levels of sound. While the 76 sounds wide open, the VI sounded like if I was playing behind a wall.

About Me

  • Biography Native from Montréal, Canada, Jean-Philippe Côté is now living in Sao Paulo, Brazil since few months. His love for music started at an early age when he took violin lessons at 5 years old. He then switched to the viola, having an attraction to the sound of it. It is at the age of 13, in his school, that he touched a saxophone for the first time, again, because of the attraction he was having of the sound that he could get out of the instrument.

He then decided to pursue his studies in music going to Cegep of Drummondville, Concordia University for a bachelor degree then Laval University for a master degree, all in jazz saxophone interpretation.

Jean-Philippe Côté played with few successful musicians and bands, such as Michel Donato, Guy Boisvert, Toro, Bong@l’eau, The Platters, The Rat Pack Return, The East Coast Boys, The Las Vegas Tenors, Elvy Rose, Soul Satisfaction, Filo Machado and Fabiano de Castro.

For the last five years, Jean-Philippe Côté played in orchestras of several cruise ships like the Norwegian Dawn, the Celebrity Mercury, the Diamond Princess, the Norwegian Sun, the Brilliance of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas and the Voyager of the Seas. He lately decided to stop his cruise ship career to concentrate more on his first passion, Jazz.

    Comments about Jean-Philippe Côté :

    - Intense soloing, a lot of energy, Gabriel Hamel, professor, guitarist
    - Good soloing, really good tenor sound, really good feel, a personality that is missing way too much in today’s jazz, David Parker, saxophonist
    - Jean-Philippe is an excellent musician and a good reader as well. His playing especially shines in the jazz area. Chris Guertin, musical director
    - Jean-Philippe did a fine job playing tenor. JP is a pleasure to be around an his welcome back at anytime, Doug Tann, musical director
    - Jean-Philippe’s saxophone playing was a great contribution to the showband. His knowledge about how horns in a big band are supposed to sound helped the showband sound professional. We hope we will see him again in a near future, Ruslan Rusin, musical director
