Skip YoungbloodThat was me about a year ago... as you can see, not the worst, but not the best either. Still need help understanding how to play "on the outside".

I play alto sax currently a cannonball big bell stone series. I mostly play gospel & jazz music. I've become mildly proficient at what I do but I compare it to someone with a very keen since of direction driving 90mph through a blinding snow storm. I can usually get where I'm going but it isn't always pretty and certainly not always clean. I use a lot of penatonic major/minor to do my soloing/improv. A buddy of mine said I need to learn to play on the outside. But I have no idea how to piece runs & licks together that aren't in the key I'm in without just running a chromatic scale. Can anyone give me any tips or licks or even practice techniques that will help me get where I'm going and actually understand how I got there? less
