Often I balk at playing for cheap or for free, but sometimes I play for free because I want to. I mean, we went into music because we love it, right? Most of us are college-educated and could get tons of other jobs. I keep in touch with my music-major classmates from Hope College, and out of the music performance majors, I'm the only one with a full-time job in music. Ironically, all the others - which include two doctors, a lawyer, a web designer, and an Air Force officer - make more money than I do. *sigh* So you can't make this totally about the money without questioning your choice of career. We have other choices, most of them more lucrative than music.
