    I think one of the best things I ever heard was when Branford Marsalis began studying classical saxophone.  He began working on the Ibert and said "I just realised how much I didn't know about the saxophone."  I believe that as a jazz/pop/r&b sa...  moreI think one of the best things I ever heard was when Branford Marsalis began studying classical saxophone.  He began working on the Ibert and said "I just realised how much I didn't know about the saxophone."  I believe that as a jazz/pop/r&b saxophonist having developed a solid technique on your instrument is the most important thing ever.  There are a lot of classical passages that keep players in the practice room going over the same phrase over and over.  It gives you a certain familiarity of the horn.  I can attribute my knowledge of my horn to my years in the practice room.  Predominatly I play jazz/pop gigs, but I did my graduate work in classical saxophone.  
    In my opinion its all about your mindset.  Sure, there are a lot of difficult passages in classical music. You really have to think about your phrasing and your breathing, as well as keeping a good solid tone that sings.  It really is a different kind of practicing than going over chord changes and effect...    less
